Heavy rainfall in Santiago, Chile, has triggered massive flash floods that have engulfed streets and sent cars floating down waterways as if they were pool toys. The sheer force of the water has left many residents in shock, with videos capturing the chaos spreading rapidly on social media.
The Associated Press reports that heavy rains drenched Chile’s capital and surrounding areas on Thursday, leading to mudslides that swept vehicles through streets, flooded homes, and forced evacuations. At least six people were injured, including a 1-year-old child with broken bones, according to officials.
President José Antonio Kast declared a state of emergency for Las Condes, a wealthy suburb east of Santiago, granting government agencies more power to respond to the crisis. The district’s mayor, Catalina San Martín, stated that 14.4 centimeters (5.7 inches) of rain had fallen in recent days — about nine times the average October rainfall — leaving the area “totally saturated.”
The Mapocho River, which runs through Santiago, overflowed, prompting evacuation orders. Chile’s disaster-response agency put 10 other districts on high alert for more landslides and ordered schools to close Friday. Rainstorms earlier this week had already damaged a few dozen homes across central Chile and left nearly 12,000 customers in Santiago without power.
No deaths were reported Thursday, but firefighters said they had rescued or evacuated more than 1,000 people. The downpours were expected to ease by Friday.
