Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin has sharply criticized New York’s Democratic leadership for refusing to honor detainers and releasing 15,000 migrants back into their communities. Mullin accused the state of enabling criminal activity by failing to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement efforts.
Mullin stated that DHS issued 14,766 detainers to New York law enforcement agencies for migrants accused of 47,750 dangerous felony charges, but the state has refused to honor any of them. He emphasized the lack of cooperation, calling it ‘absolute silence’ from New York officials.
‘You have to ask yourself, ‘Why would they release these individuals back onto the streets?’ They’re illegals,’ Mullin said. ‘They have no right to be back into the United States. They’ve committed a crime. We know that they’re the worst.’
Mullin also condemned the ‘sanctuary politicians’ for endangering American citizens by allowing ‘criminal activity to thrive.’ He highlighted that this is not the first time the DHS has criticized sanctuary states for shielding dangerous migrants from deportation.
In March, DHS reported that various sanctuary states and cities across the country had refused to honor an additional 18,000 detainers issued for ICE to take dangerous criminals into custody. Earlier this year, ICE noted that sanctuary California had released 4,500 migrants convicted of murder, sexual assault, and child sex crimes without honoring detainers.
The situation has sparked renewed debate over sanctuary policies and the role of state and local governments in federal immigration enforcement. As the administration continues to push for stricter immigration measures, the issue remains a focal point in political discourse.
