U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that Ukraine should consider replacing its current leader, President Volodymyr Zelensky, stating that the war with Russia could have been avoided if Zelensky had been in a more capable position. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Trump said, “I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal,” adding that Zelensky has been an impediment to peace talks.

Trump’s Criticism of Zelensky

Trump accused Zelensky of failing to secure a peace deal and blamed him for the ongoing war, stating that “that war would have never started” if he had been in power. He also criticized Zelensky for the loss of territory and the high number of casualties, calling the conflict “a war that should have never started.”

Ukraine’s Response and Peace Talks

Zelensky, who was an actor before becoming president, has faced criticism from Washington for canceling elections under martial law. He cited logistical and financial challenges as reasons for the cancellation. Trump has labeled Zelensky a “dictator,” further escalating tensions between the two leaders.

The public spat between the U.S. and Ukraine leaders came as peace talks in Miami ended earlier than expected. Ukrainian and European diplomats were preparing to continue discussions with U.S. negotiators, but Kyiv announced that their team was returning home, signaling a potential breakdown in negotiations.

Russia’s Oil Deal and Zelensky’s Concerns

Hours before his comments on Ukraine, Trump announced a deal with Russia to supply 300,000 tonnes of diesel fuel to the global market, with more planned for November. Zelensky strongly criticized the deal, arguing that the revenue would be used to fund Russia’s war efforts, including the production of weapons and recruitment of mercenaries.

Zelensky warned that any additional funding for Russia would only prolong the conflict, emphasizing the need for stronger international support to restrict Russia’s ability to wage war.

Key Disagreements in Peace Talks

The two sides have remained unwilling to compromise on critical issues, particularly the control of the Donbas region. Zelensky has refused to cede any territory to Russia, stating that it would be used later to launch a full-scale invasion. This stance has complicated peace negotiations and highlighted the deep divisions between the conflicting parties.
