President Donald Trump on Saturday criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for prolonging the war with Russia and called for new elections in Ukraine, claiming Zelensky has refused to make peace deals with Moscow.
Trump Blames Zelensky for War Continuation
Speaking to reporters, Trump said Zelensky has “not wanted to make a deal” with Russia, which he claims has led to the ongoing conflict. Trump reiterated his previous claims that Zelensky should have resolved the war years ago, with the potential for a peaceful resolution.
“He could have settled this thing many times,” Trump said. “This is a war that should have never happened. Ukraine, Russia should have never happened.”
Trump Suggests New Leader for Ukraine
Trump suggested that Ukraine needs a new leader, stating that Zelensky should have held an election to address the ongoing war. Ukraine has not held an election since Zelensky was first elected in 2019.
“I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president,” Trump added, emphasizing that Zelensky’s leadership has not led to peace or stability.
Blames Zelensky for High Fuel Prices
Trump also blamed Zelensky for attacking Russian oil refineries, which he claims has contributed to high diesel prices in the United States. “He better damn well stop,” Trump said.
“I think that Russia would like to make a deal,” Trump said, but added that Zelensky has not been willing to negotiate. “But as I said, this is something that could have been solved many times, but for whatever reason, Zelensky does not want to make a deal.”
Russia Seeks Peace, Says Trump
Despite his criticism of Zelensky, Trump claimed that Russia is eager for a settlement. “President Putin would like to see a settlement strongly,” he said, adding that Russia is “freeing up a lot of oil for the world” at a “very low price.”
Trump’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with the U.S. continuing to support Ukraine’s defense efforts. However, Trump’s criticism highlights the growing divide between the U.S. and Ukraine on the path to a potential resolution of the conflict.
