U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a ceasefire on energy infrastructure strikes between Ukraine and Russia, marking a significant shift in the ongoing conflict. In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared, “Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!”

Trump’s Push for Zelensky’s Replacement

The announcement came amid a public spat between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump suggested that Ukraine should replace Zelensky with a leader “who can make a deal,” implying that Zelensky has been a major obstacle to a peace deal with Russia.

Zelensky’s Response and Election Offer

In response, Zelensky proposed holding elections in Ukraine, which have been suspended since 2024 under martial law, in exchange for a two-month ceasefire. Speaking to ABC, Zelensky said, “If President Trump really wants to have some changes during elections, I also shared this with his team: Please tell Putin, give us two months, 60 days of total ceasefire, 60 days, and we will organise elections.” Zelensky emphasized that while the deal was not ideal, it was a crucial first step toward peace.

Energy Strikes and Ceasefire Calls

Both sides have increasingly targeted each other’s energy infrastructure as the war has reached a stalemate. Ukraine has claimed to have disabled 51% of Russia’s oil refining capacity through drone and missile strikes. Zelensky urged Trump to signal Russia not to attack Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, stating, “we are ready for [a] ceasefire, we are ready to begin from any kind of steps of de-escalation.”

Remaining Challenges

Despite the ceasefire announcement, the issue of territorial control remains unresolved. Russia demands that Ukraine cede the Donbas region, while Kyiv refuses, arguing it would serve as a staging ground for future attacks. The Trump administration has facilitated some meetings between the two sides, but a full resolution remains elusive.
