Underdog NJ GOP senatorial candidate Justin Murphy sparks debate with bold Iran stance against Booker.

In a heated exchange during a Senate debate, New Jersey GOP senatorial candidate Justin Murphy challenged incumbent Cory Booker over U.S. policy toward Iran, calling for a decisive end to the conflict. Murphy, a U.S. Navy veteran, responded to Booker’s criticism of former President Donald Trump’s Iran strategy with a direct and fiery rebuttal.
Strong Stance on Iran
When asked what he would tell Trump to do about Iran, Murphy immediately replied, “Finish it. Finish that war in a positive manner.” He accused the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of being a “radical terrorist organization” that has caused decades of suffering and instability in the Middle East. Murphy recounted his childhood memories of the 1979 Iranian embassy hostage crisis, emphasizing the need for a final resolution to the conflict.
“The Iranian people have suffered enough,” Murphy said, urging Trump to “put your cowboy hat on and get out there and kick some a** and get this done and done right.” His remarks drew applause from the audience, highlighting the emotional weight of his personal and political stance.
Political Context and Fundraising
Despite the momentum of his remarks, Murphy faces an uphill battle. Booker, who boasts over $23 million in campaign funds, has a significant financial edge in the race. Murphy, however, has not backed down, questioning the sources of Booker’s fundraising and the impact of such large sums on the election.
“I’d like to know how much of it came from inside New Jersey and how much came from outside,” Murphy said, reflecting the broader concerns about campaign finance and the influence of external donors in state elections.
Booker’s Position on War Powers
Booker, while acknowledging Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism, has argued that no president should have unilateral authority to wage war without congressional approval. He introduced a war powers resolution to force a troop withdrawal, but the measure failed in a 47-53 vote after key senators, including Pennsylvania Democrat John Fetterman, blocked it.
Booker’s stance on war powers has become a focal point of the debate, as his position contrasts sharply with Murphy’s call for decisive action. Murphy’s remarks have positioned him as a challenger not just on policy, but also on the broader narrative of national security and foreign intervention.
