A ninth-grade student has been arrested after allegedly shooting a principal and a teacher at a middle school in Southern France on Monday morning. According to local reports, the incident occurred at the Joseph-Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, where a 53-year-old principal and a 37-year-old teacher were injured.
Shooting at School Sparks Concern
The student, believed to be in the 9th grade, is said to have entered the school with a 12-gauge shotgun and opened fire. Local authorities confirmed that the suspect was disarmed by another staff member before being arrested. Deputy mayor Giovanni Schipani noted that the principal and teacher are not in life-threatening condition.
Witness Accounts and Past Relationships
A student witness described the chaos of the shooting, stating that she and a classmate were forced to flee the scene. She recounted seeing the shooter reloading his weapon before firing down the stairs. The witness also mentioned that the shooter was previously her friend in the sixth grade but that they had stopped talking after.
Authorities Deny Link to Student Protests
Local police stated that the suspect is not known for any acts of delinquency or radicalization. Despite the motive remaining unknown, authorities have denied any connection to the broader student movement, which has seen widespread riots across France in recent weeks. The Ministry of National Education reported over 100 teachers and staff injured in the riots, with at least eight injured on Monday alone.
Political Reactions to the Violence
National Rally president Jordan Bardella condemned the violence, calling it a sign of societal barbarism and urging the state to protect educational staff. President Emmanuel Macron expressed solidarity with the victims, praising the composure of the school staff in preventing further harm.
