Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has spoken out following a federal raid on her Washington, D.C., home, which occurred in the early morning. Omar took to X to address the situation, stating she was “targeted” by the Trump administration over political motivations.
Omar Calls Raid Political Intimidation
“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” Omar wrote. She added that for ten years, the Trump administration had targeted her with baseless lies and smear campaigns, describing the raid as “the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”
Federal Agents Execute Search Warrant
Federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a branch of ICE, conducted the raid on Omar’s home. The Justice Department confirmed that the agents executed a court-authorized search warrant. The investigation centers on immigration documents completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child, according to Fox News.
Omar’s Immigration Background
Omar, who came to the United States as a child refugee from war-torn Somalia in 1995, secured American citizenship in 2000. Last month, White House border czar Tom Homan confirmed that ICE had opened an investigation into allegations that Omar married her brother to commit immigration fraud.
Marriage Allegations and Divorce History
Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen who some allege is her biological brother, in 2009. The couple reportedly split in 2011 and divorced in 2017. Homan stated, “If someone committed an immigration violation and someone committed marriage fraud or anything like that, regardless if they’re a congresswoman or not, no one’s above the law.”
Legal Process and Ongoing Investigation
Omar has not commented on the legal process or the specifics of the investigation, but she has made it clear that she believes the raid was politically motivated. The Justice Department has not provided further details on the case, and the investigation is ongoing.
