New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani skipped Manhattan’s Columbus Day parade on Monday, sparking disappointment among Italian Americans who see the decision as a slight to their community. The event, which celebrates Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the New World in 1492, drew criticism from some Italian Americans who felt Mamdani’s absence was disrespectful.

Mayor’s Absence Draws Criticism

Mamdani, a leftist mayor known for attending parades for other communities such as the West Indian Day Parade, Mexican Independence Day Parade, and the Sikh Day Parade, did not participate in the Columbus Day celebration. Retired school teacher Albert Esposito expressed disappointment, stating, “It’s very disappointing because we elected him the mayor, and he is supposed to be representing everybody.”

Paul DeSpirito, a sandwich business owner, called the mayor’s decision a “slap in the face to the Italian American community.” Organizers of a Brooklyn parade also expressed disappointment, noting they were “disappointed Mamdani couldn’t join” and looking forward to welcoming him in 2027.

Historical Tensions and Past Statements

Italian Americans have long fought New York Democrats to preserve Columbus monuments amid a surge of criticism against the explorer. Mamdani made his stance clear in a 2020 social media post, where he called for the removal of a Columbus monument and raised his middle finger to the statue.

Mamdani’s office stated he plans to host an Italian American heritage reception at Gracie Mansion in the coming weeks. The mayor also highlighted a social media video celebrating Italian American heritage month.

Contrast with Trump’s Columbus Day Remarks

Mamdani’s treatment of Columbus Day contrasted with former President Donald Trump, who praised the explorer and placed a new statue of Columbus outside the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Trump called Columbus Day a “big day for our great Italian American Community” and celebrated the return of Columbus statues after being removed by critics.
