House Democrats have officially recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead of Columbus Day, emphasizing the importance of honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous communities. The decision reflects a broader shift in acknowledging the complex legacy of European colonization and the enduring resilience of Indigenous peoples.

In an X post, the House Democrats account praised Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities for being central to the story of America. The post stated, ‘This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the histories, cultures and enduring contributions of Indigenous Peoples. Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities are central to the story of America, and they continue to strengthen and shape our nation each day.’

Public Reaction and Historical Context

While the post received widespread support from many, some critics argued that recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day could be seen as anti-American or anti-western. One user responded, ‘It’s Columbus Day,’ while another commented, ‘If it’s anti-American specifically or anti-western generally, the Democrat party is on it.’

Former President Joe Biden officially recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 2021, stating that ‘Federal policies systematically sought to assimilate and displace Native people and eradicate Native cultures.’ Biden also reaffirmed a commitment to supporting Tribal Nations and protecting Indigenous rights globally.

Support from Congressional Leaders

Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) also took to X to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Pressley highlighted the essential contributions of Indigenous and Native American communities to Massachusetts and the nation, while Markey emphasized the need for justice and sovereignty for Indigenous peoples.

These actions underscore a growing recognition within the Democratic Party of the need to address historical injustices and support Indigenous communities in the present day.
