Jeff Bezos: AI Could Enable Three-Day Workweeks for Families
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos says AI could allow workers to support families with three-day workweeks, reshaping the economy.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has expressed optimism about the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in reshaping the modern workforce and economy. During a recent interview with Fox News, Bezos suggested that AI-driven productivity gains could enable some workers to reduce their work hours to three days a week while still supporting their households. He framed this shift as a positive outcome of economic progress, rather than a loss for workers.
AI and the Future of Work
Bezos predicted that AI could drive double-digit productivity gains across various sectors, fundamentally altering the structure of employment. He emphasized that his primary concern is not the potential for job displacement due to automation, but rather the challenge employers may face in attracting workers if people choose to work fewer hours. He stated, ‘It’s going to actually be difficult to hire people,’ but added that the goal is not to force shorter hours on anyone, but to give people the choice to work less while still maintaining their financial stability.
Amazon’s Workforce Reduction
Bezos’s comments come amid Amazon’s own significant workforce reductions. The company has already cut approximately 30,000 corporate roles across two rounds of layoffs in October 2025 and January 2026, marking the largest reduction in its history. Bezos attributed these cuts to the company’s rapid hiring during the pandemic, calling the layoffs a necessary correction rather than an indicator of broader financial troubles.
Space-Based Data Centers
Bezos also highlighted the physical and infrastructural challenges posed by AI, particularly the high energy and land requirements of data centers. As a solution, he proposed placing data centers in space, calling it a ‘good reason’ to look beyond Earth. Blue Origin, his space company, has sought government permission to launch over 50,000 satellites that could function as ‘orbital data centers.’
Regulation and AI Governance
On the topic of AI regulation, Bezos advocated for a ‘light hand’ approach, urging the government to focus on preventing misuse rather than restricting the technology itself. He used the analogy of knives and murder to illustrate his point, stating, ‘You don’t want to regulate knives. You want to regulate murder.’
Political Implications of AI
Bezos’s vision for AI’s impact on the economy is reshaping the political landscape. He has been vocal about the need for a MAGA (Make America Great Again) approach to AI governance, ensuring that control of the technology does not fall into the hands of leftists in Silicon Valley or foreign powers like China.
