The FBI has charged actress Selma Blair with assault after she allegedly injured two flight attendants during a midair incident on a Delta Air Lines flight. The agency cited the violation under the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States. No court date has been set for Blair’s first appearance in Brooklyn federal court.
Blair was taken into custody on Sunday following the flight’s arrival at JFK Airport. Her representative claimed she experienced a medical emergency that led to the alleged conduct. This incident has reignited concerns about her behavior on flights, following a previous incident in 2016.
2016 Flight Incident and Public Apology
In 2016, Blair was removed from a Delta flight on a stretcher after an outburst during a flight from Cancun, Mexico, to Los Angeles. Witnesses reported that she suddenly burst into tears and began shouting strange statements in the first-class section. She reportedly said, “He burns my private parts. He won’t let me eat or drink. He beats me. He’s going to kill me.”
Passengers and crew described Blair as having been drinking wine and possibly mixing it with medication. Two nurses reportedly checked her bag for pills, and the pilot radioed ahead about a passenger who had apparently mixed medication with alcohol. Upon landing at LAX, medical personnel boarded the plane and Blair was taken out on a stretcher.
Blair later issued a public apology through a statement given to Vanity Fair. She admitted to mixing alcohol with medication, which led to her blacking out and saying and doing things she deeply regrets. She expressed shame over the incident and apologized to all affected passengers and crew.
Health and Advocacy
Blair was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2018 and has since become an advocate for disability rights. Her recent legal troubles have brought renewed attention to her public persona and the impact of her health condition on her behavior.
