Ukraine’s recent drone strikes on Russian data centers have significantly disrupted Moscow’s online disinformation campaigns, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. During a video address at the Warsaw Security Forum, Zelensky highlighted the impact of the attacks on Yandex, Russia’s search and cloud giant, noting a noticeable decrease in bot activity and online provocations.
Targeting Yandex’s Infrastructure
Over four days, Ukrainian drones struck three data centers operated by Yandex, causing a sharp decline in automated traffic from its network. The attacks, which targeted facilities in Sasovo, Kaluga, and Vladimir, led to significant outages in Russia’s digital infrastructure, affecting services such as ride-hailing, bill payments, and smart-home devices. The disruptions also rippled into neighboring countries like Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Armenia.
Zelensky stated that the reduction in bot activity on social media platforms made it easier for users to engage in more constructive conversations, with fewer instances of hate speech and division. He emphasized that the outages were a clear indication that the bot networks had been centralized and were likely originating from Yandex’s infrastructure.
Russia’s Digital Disinformation Strategy
Russia has long used bot networks to spread disinformation, including antisemitic conspiracies and political propaganda. French authorities previously attributed a 2023 surge in Star of David graffiti in Paris to Russia’s Doppelgänger network, which operated thousands of bot accounts on social media platforms. These campaigns have also been used to inflame political tensions in the United States and tarnish Ukraine and Israel.
Despite the disruption, Kyiv’s actions have not entirely silenced Russia’s digital operations. While the strikes have dealt a significant blow to the country’s digital backbone, whether they have completely neutralized the Kremlin’s troll farms remains uncertain. The attacks, however, have demonstrated the vulnerability of Russia’s digital infrastructure and the potential for cyber warfare to disrupt state-sponsored disinformation efforts.
