Comedian and HBO host Bill Maher has confirmed he will return to the White House for a second dinner with President Donald Trump, following a surprise invitation that promises a more cordial conversation than the previous encounter.
Surprise Invitation and Promises
Maher revealed the news during a recent episode of his “Club Random” podcast, where he shared that he received a second invitation out of the blue. The president, according to Maher, has sweetened the deal by promising not to “say bad things” about him, a stark contrast to the previous dinner where Trump’s remarks were more scathing.
“It’s so weird, you know, after the first dinner, he was — I went back to doing what I do and you know, for people who —” Maher said, before his guest, Ari Emanuel, interjected with a humorous take on Trump’s past behavior.
Reactions and Criticism
Following the first dinner, Maher faced significant backlash from the political left, who criticized him for giving Trump credibility by engaging in the conversation. “My Dinner with Adolf,” as Larry David mockingly titled his essay, highlighted the public’s mixed reactions to Maher’s decision to meet with the president.
Despite the criticism, Maher expressed surprise at Trump’s demeanor during the first meeting, remarking that “a crazy person doesn’t live in the White House.” He noted that the president’s behavior was more controlled than expected, though still far from conventional.
Continuing the Dialogue
Maher’s acceptance of the second invitation suggests a willingness to continue the dialogue, even if it remains contentious. His humorous take on the situation, comparing Trump’s remarks to being called a hockey puck by Don Rickles, underscores the ongoing dynamic between the comedian and the former president.
