New York Ignores 16,000 ICE Detainers, Critics Call Policies ‘Evil’
Homeland Security criticizes New York’s sanctuary policies for ignoring ICE detainers, leading to increased crime and safety risks.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has condemned New York’s sanctuary policies, accusing Democratic leaders of ignoring over 16,000 ICE detainer requests and endangering public safety. The criticism comes amid growing concerns over the impact of New York’s refusal to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.
Sanctuary Policies and Federal Cooperation
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) regularly files detainer requests for illegal aliens who commit crimes in the U.S. In states like Florida or Kansas, which cooperate with ICE, these requests result in local authorities handing over individuals for deportation. However, in states like New York and Illinois, where authorities do not cooperate with ICE, the federal government faces significant challenges in apprehending illegal aliens.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, New York has ignored 16,000 detainer requests since the Trump administration. These ignored requests have led to the release of individuals who have committed serious crimes, including homicide, sexual offenses, and violent assaults. Mullin highlighted this issue, stating that the sanctuary policies under Governor Kathy Hochul have been a disaster for New York and the rest of the country.
Examples of Ignored Detainers
Mullin pointed to recent cases where New York authorities ignored detainer requests, including the arrest of Oscar Belgal, an illegal alien who was shot by ICE officers after ramming them with his vehicle. Despite the violent incident, Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani attempted to frame Belgal as a martyr and even pressured the Trump administration to release him back onto the streets.
Another example is an illegal alien who stabbed a New York Police Department detective. Despite having a detainer request, the individual was not handed over to federal authorities, highlighting the ongoing issue of sanctuary policies allowing criminals to roam free.
Impact on Public Safety
Mullin criticized the Democratic leadership for their efforts to protect illegal aliens, arguing that these policies have led to increased crime and lawlessness. He stated that innocent Americans have been murdered, shot, stabbed, and raped by illegal aliens in New York and other states due to the lack of cooperation with ICE.
The Department of Homeland Security has condemned these policies, demanding that Governor Hochul and her colleagues put an end to the practice before more innocent lives are lost. Hochul recently signed the Local Cops, Local Crimes Act, which imposed restrictions on certain types of statewide cooperation with ICE on civil immigration matters.
According to DHS, there were deeply troubling 52,503 criminal charges or convictions associated with the ICE detainers that New York municipalities have rejected. The crimes allegedly committed by illegal migrants included 131 homicides, 132 kidnappings, 1,017 sexual offenses, 1,561 counts of driving under the influence, 1,631 burglaries, 1,776 robberies, and 2,198 weapons infractions.
Mullin emphasized that the sanctuary policies are not just a local issue but have broader implications for national security and public safety. He called on federal and state leaders to take immediate action to address the crisis and protect American citizens from the dangers posed by illegal immigration.
