Far-left incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA) denied having presidential ambitions for 2028 during a heated debate against Republican challenger Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) on Tuesday night. The debate, hosted by the Atlanta Press Club, saw Ossoff directly address rumors about his potential run for the presidency.
Ossoff Vows to Serve Full Term
When asked about his rumored presidential ambitions, Ossoff responded, “Yes, I will. I have zero interest in running for president.” He emphasized his commitment to serving a full six-year term if reelected to the Senate. “I’m not running for president. I’m running for reelection to the Senate,” he added, highlighting the contrast between the two candidates.
Collins Challenges Ossoff’s Claims
Rep. Mike Collins, who is endorsed by former President Donald Trump, rejected Ossoff’s answer during his rebuttal. Collins accused Ossoff of being an “elitist” who is “using Georgia as a platform” for his potential 2028 presidential bid. “He is running for president. He’s gonna be your DSA candidate,” Collins insisted, referring to the Democratic Socialists of America.
Ossoff’s Political Strategy
Ossoff has previously denied any plans to run for president in 2028, instead calling on his party to focus on reclaiming power from Republicans in the 2026 midterms. However, he has gained the favor of the radical socialist wing of the Democratic Party. Far-left, anti-Israel streamer Hasan Piker, who has previously made controversial statements, called Ossoff his “dark horse” presidential pick for 2028.
Distancing from Piker
Ossoff distanced himself from Piker days after the endorsement, citing Piker’s threatening rhetoric toward American Jews. Piker had previously claimed that “America deserved 9/11,” a statement he has since attempted to backpedal.
Tight Race and Political Significance
The Georgia Senate race is expected to be extremely tight, potentially determining which party holds the majority during the second half of President Donald Trump’s second term. RealClear Polling shows Ossoff leading by an average of 8.1 points less than a month before election day.
