Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded sarcastically to a Russian journalist during a public appearance at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, sparking a brief exchange that drew attention due to its blunt tone.

As Zelensky walked alongside the U.N. General Assembly building, he was fielding questions from journalists when a Russian reporter, identified as Valentin Bogdanov of Moscow state media, repeatedly addressed him by his full name, Vladimir Alexandrovich. The journalist asked, “When are we going to Moscow?” multiple times in Russian.

Zelensky, clearly annoyed, turned to the reporter and replied with a sarcastic remark, saying he would come to Moscow “on a missile, blyat.” The Russian expletive “blyat” is often used to express frustration and can be interpreted as “damnit” or, more strongly, as an insult. The exchange caused a stir, with Germany’s Die Welt noting that Russia took exception to the President’s blunt language.

Bogdanov has been labeled by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council as one of the Kremlin’s “information saboteurs in the West,” and a “Russian propagandist” for state media. This incident marks another instance where Zelensky has turned a question about potential peace talks with Russia into a lighthearted joke.

Zelensskey has previously used humor to deflect questions about traveling to Moscow. During a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the NATO Ankara summit in July, he jokingly said, “It’s difficult, there are a lot of Ukrainian drones there,” prompting laughter from the room.
