NATO Jets Scrambled as Russian Helicopter Enters Polish Airspace

Poland has reported that a Russian Mi-8 helicopter briefly entered its airspace, prompting the scrambling of NATO jet interceptors. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, was brief, with the helicopter flying at an altitude of 300 meters for just 42 seconds before exiting the country.

The Russian aircraft entered Polish airspace from the Kaliningrad Oblast, a Russian exclave in northern Europe, near the town of Braniewo in the Warmia region. The Polish military’s Operational Command of the Armed Forces in Warsaw confirmed the alert, stating that fighter jets were deployed and ground troops were placed on alert.

Poland has accused Russia of once again testing the readiness of NATO air defenses. The country has taken a firm stance, viewing all Russian aircraft and weapons entering its territory as deliberate provocations. This incident follows a pattern of Russian air incursions into NATO airspace, with dozens of drones reportedly crossing into European nations each month.

Recently, Poland shot down 19 Russian drones in September 2025, calling it a targeted attack. The country’s foreign minister emphasized that the drones were not off course but were deliberately aimed at Polish territory. Despite Russia’s denials, Poland has consistently maintained that such actions are part of a broader pattern of provocation.

The current helicopter incursion came amid another air incident, with the Polish military deploying troops near the Medieval castle at Malbork to investigate a mysterious object believed to have crashed in the area. The object, detected by air defense radars, could have been a balloon, a meteorological phenomenon, or a flock of birds, according to reports from PolSatNews.
