Former Vice President Kamala Harris has publicly criticized the Biden administration for its handling of the Israel-Palestine conflict, particularly its approach to the war in Gaza. During a speech in Seoul at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies, Harris stated that the U.S. should have exerted more pressure on Israel to act more forcefully and sooner, calling the current administration’s approach a failure.

Public Criticism of Biden’s Gaza Policy

Harris accused the Biden administration of offering Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “blank check,” a stark contrast to her earlier public statements during the 2024 presidential campaign. While she previously expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself, she now openly criticized the administration for not using its leverage to curb Israeli actions in Gaza. This marks a significant shift in her public stance, moving away from the more balanced approach she took during the campaign.

Historical Context and Campaign Shifts

During the 2024 election, Harris faced pressure from left-wing activists and Arab American voters who wanted the U.S. to condition or suspend military aid to Israel due to its conduct in Gaza. The Uncommitted movement gained traction in Michigan, a key battleground state with a large Arab American population. Despite this, Harris stopped short of endorsing an arms embargo on Israel.

Recent Statements and Public Positions

Following a July 2024 meeting with Netanyahu, Harris described the situation in Gaza as “devastating,” citing civilian casualties and family displacement. She also reaffirmed her stance on Israel’s right to defend itself and her commitment to securing a ceasefire and the release of hostages taken by Hamas during its October 7, 2023, attack.

Internal and External Pressures

In an August 2024 CNN interview, Harris was asked directly if she would withhold weapons shipments to Israel if elected president. She reaffirmed her support for Israel’s defense, stating her commitment was “unequivocal and unwavering.” However, she also emphasized the importance of how Israel exercises its right to defend itself.

Uncommitted Movement’s Response

Despite her efforts, the Uncommitted National Movement did not endorse Harris, arguing that she had not committed to ending unconditional U.S. weapons transfers to Israel. The group, which opposes a Trump presidency, urged voters not to support third-party candidates who could help him win.

Post-Election Outreach

Since her defeat to Trump, Harris has reached out to anti-Israel leftists, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and met with Abbas Alawieh, a co-founder of the Uncommitted movement. These efforts suggest a continued attempt to bridge the gap between her political base and the more progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
