A cyberattack has severely disrupted refrigeration, delivery, and pricing systems at supermarket chains across France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, affecting at least 700 stores. The incident caused refrigeration units to heat up to 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius), forcing continuous defrost cycles that normally last only two hours a day. Sources described the situation as a “wave of heat” escaping from fridges and freezers, creating a chaotic environment in stores.

Impact on Major Retail Chains

Supermarkets including Intermarché, Leclerc, and Coopérative U were among those affected. The attack reportedly targeted refrigeration controls made by Danfoss, a Danish company, and also impacted delivery systems and in-store pricing through electronic shelf labels. Dominique Schelcher, president of Coopérative U, confirmed the incident and called the situation “extremely serious.” He stated that teams had been mobilized to address the problem, with an investigation ongoing.

Financial and Operational Losses

Losses are expected to climb into the millions of Euros as stores are forced to discard spoiled food. The attack has also disrupted the supply chain, with deliveries delayed and pricing systems compromised. The exact cause of the breach remains under investigation, though Reuters reported that Danfoss blamed “outdated firmware” for the vulnerability exploited in the attack.

Broader Cybersecurity Concerns

No one has claimed responsibility for the cyberattack, and no ransom demands have been made. This incident has raised concerns about the security of critical infrastructure, particularly in the food and retail sectors. Breitbart News has previously reported on infrastructure sabotage, including a suspected sabotage incident involving a train derailment in France in September. The derailment, which occurred near Rouen, left an 18-year-old woman injured and prompted police to investigate a possible link to the rail segment found on the tracks.

Call for Enhanced Cybersecurity Measures

The incident highlights the growing threat of cyberattacks on essential services and the need for stronger cybersecurity protocols. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on mitigating the damage and preventing future incidents that could have even more severe consequences for public safety and economic stability.
