Republican U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson (R-IA) has criticized China’s trade practices, accusing the country of ‘jerking us around for a long time’ on soybean exports. During a segment on the Fox News Radio ‘Guy Benson Show,’ Hinson expressed concerns about China’s failure to honor trade agreements and the need for stronger accountability mechanisms.
Concerns Over Soybean Trade Practices
Hinson stated that she hopes the ongoing negotiations with China will ensure that American farmers are treated fairly. She emphasized the importance of holding China accountable for its trade actions, particularly regarding soybean exports. ‘They need to fulfill their end of the deal, and we need the mechanisms to make sure they’re held accountable to that,’ she said.
Legislation for Trade Accountability
Rep. Hinson also mentioned her proposed legislation aimed at addressing trade crimes, including the illegal importation of Chinese steel through Canadian companies. She stressed the need for tariffs and duties to be enforced effectively, stating that such actions are wrong and must be addressed through legal means.
Focus on Supply Chain and Economic Interests
In addition to trade accountability, Hinson highlighted the importance of focusing on the U.S. supply chain and the mutual economic interests between the U.S. and China. She noted that while China needs access to the U.S. economy, the U.S. also benefits from exporting food products to China. ‘We need to lower costs and focus on our supply chain,’ she said.
Hope for a Fair Trade Deal
Rep. Hinson expressed hope that the negotiations would result in a fair trade deal that protects American interests. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that China meets its obligations under the trade agreements and that the U.S. has the necessary tools to enforce these agreements. ‘I hope that the president is calling them out on their malign tactics,’ she said, adding that President Trump’s focus on making good deals aligns with her concerns about trade fairness.
