Brian Flores Lawsuit Claims Memo Contains Racial Stereotypes
Brian Flores’ legal team alleges NFL hiring memo contains racial stereotypes in discrimination case.

Brian Flores’ legal team has revealed a memo they claim contains racial stereotypes as part of a discrimination lawsuit against the NFL. The memo, which was unsealed in court, was prepared by recruiter Korn Ferry for the Las Vegas Raiders during a recent head-coaching search. It is part of a broader lawsuit brought by Flores, along with former head coaches Steve Wilks and Ray Horton, against the league and six teams.
Content of the Memo
The memo, initially obtained by Front Office Sports, references talking points teams allegedly used when hiring Black head coaches. It notes that Flores was described as ‘polished and a good presenter’ despite growing up in Brownsville, Brooklyn, an area with a predominantly Black population. Flores’ lawyers argue the report assumes someone from Brownsville wouldn’t have strong public speaking skills, despite the fact that over two-thirds of the population in that area is Black, according to the NYU Furman Center.
Legal Arguments and Stereotypes
Flores’ attorney, Michael Willemin, stated that the memo painted his client as an ‘angry Black man’ while downplaying his intelligence. He highlighted the memo’s focus on Flores’ alleged ‘weaknesses,’ including a lack of self-awareness, erratic behavior, micro-managing, knee-jerk decisions, and a ‘chip on his shoulder.’ Willemin also mentioned that the memo suggested Flores once threatened violence toward a GM, further reinforcing racial stereotypes.
Other Allegations and Responses
The same section of the memo referenced Tua Tagovailoa’s 2024 comments calling Flores ‘a terrible person,’ which the legal team claims shattered Flores’ confidence and made him ‘pessimistic and adversarial.’ Flores responded to the remarks by saying he used the feedback to grow as a leader.
Flores, now the Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator, has guided the team to a 5-0 start in 2026 with the NFL’s top-scoring defense. His legal team’s argument centers on the idea that the memo reflects systemic racial bias in the NFL’s hiring practices, which they believe contributed to Flores’ career challenges.
