Former President Bill Clinton is making a late campaign appearance in Florida, joining Democrats in their final push for Governor David Jolly ahead of the November 3 election. Clinton will attend an interfaith event in Hollywood on October 20, marking his first public campaign stop of the 2026 midterms, according to Jolly’s campaign.

Democratic Strategy Amid Tight Race

Jolly, a former Republican congressman who recently won the Democratic nomination, faces Republican Rep. Byron Donalds in the race to replace outgoing Gov. Ron DeSantis. The contest is shaping up as a closely contested race, with recent polls showing Donalds with a slight edge. A Stetson University poll released Tuesday showed Donalds leading Jolly by 11 points, 52% to 41%, among modeled likely voters. Other polls have shown a narrower contest, with some showing the candidates tied or close.

Clinton’s Role in State Politics

Clinton’s involvement comes as Democrats seek to break a long-standing streak of losing the governor’s race in Florida. Lawton Chiles was the last Democrat elected governor, winning reelection in 1994. Jolly is now seeking to end that streak, but the race remains highly competitive. Early voting is set to begin in parts of Florida, and Clinton’s presence is expected to provide Jolly with a prominent Democratic surrogate during the final stretch of the campaign.

Broader Impact of Clinton’s Involvement

Clinton’s support for Florida Democrats extends beyond the governor’s race. Earlier this week, he and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries headlined a New York fundraiser for Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), who is seeking reelection in a newly drawn district. The district, altered by DeSantis-backed congressional redistricting, is now considered a toss-up.

Clinton’s Campaign History

Clinton has made similar late campaign appearances in previous elections, including during the 2022 midterms and the 2024 presidential campaign, where he supported then-Vice President Kamala Harris and other candidates. His involvement in the Florida race underscores the importance of the state in national politics and the role of high-profile figures in shaping electoral outcomes.
