School District Avoids Linking 9/11 to Islam, Legal Group Demands Clarity

A liberal school district in Fairfax County, Virginia, has come under scrutiny after issuing guidance that instructed teachers not to associate the 9/11 attacks with Islam or Muslims. The guidance, released in late August, focuses on combating ‘anti-Muslim bias’ and promoting ‘safe spaces’ for Muslim students, rather than addressing the historical and ideological links between the attacks and radical Islam.
Legal Group Demands Transparency
Conservative legal group America First Legal has called for transparency, requesting all communications and documents related to the creation of the guidance. The group argues that the district is attempting to sanitize history and erase the reality of the 9/11 attacks, which were carried out by Al Qaeda, a jihadist group linked to global terrorism.
“Fairfax County Public Schools is attempting to sanitize history and erase the radical Islamic terrorism that struck our nation on September 11, 2001,” said America First Legal Counsel Will Scolinos. “Those unforgettable attacks are a national tragedy, with effects far exceeding ‘Islamophobia.’ Parents and the public must have full transparency regarding who is responsible for stripping truth from our children’s classrooms.”
Guidance Focuses on Racism, Not Terrorism
The guidance, first reported by Fox News, emphasizes addressing supposed racism rather than reflecting on the deadly attacks. Teachers were told not to focus on an examination of Islam during 9/11 commemorations, and were warned that doing so could send a harmful message that all Muslims are responsible for the attacks.
“Do not focus a commemorative learning experience about 9/11 on an examination of Islam,” teachers were instructed. “Students deserve consistent and meaningful learning about world religions, and about Muslim perspectives and contributions, throughout their K-12 experience.” However, the guidance explicitly stated that the ideology of Al Qaeda should not be linked to ‘Islam or to Muslims as a religious community.’ Teachers were also encouraged to include Muslim Americans among the ‘heroes, helpers, and victims’ in their lessons about 9/11.
Contrast with Texas Curriculum
In contrast to Fairfax County, Texas has approved new curriculum standards that ensure students are taught the connection between the 9/11 attacks and radical Islam. The history standards in Texas also discuss the violence surrounding the emergence of Islam, highlighting a clear divergence in educational approaches.
