Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the America First foreign policy as a matter of common sense, stating it is what is right for America before anything else. In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, Rubio addressed critics of the policy, asserting that it is not about putting America second or third but about putting American interests first.
Rejecting Criticism of America First
Rubio dismissed criticism of the term ‘America First,’ saying that no candidate would run on the platform of putting America second. ‘How many candidates would be elected if they went out and told the American people, ‘My job is to put America second, or America third, or America last,’ he said. ‘If they don’t like America First, they should have the guts to go out there and tell people, ‘I am running for office on the belief that our foreign policy should be driven by America second or America third.’
Supporting Trump’s UN Address
Rubio said President Donald Trump’s address to the United Nations General Assembly was an example of common sense, emphasizing that America’s foreign policy should be driven by what is good for the United States. ‘Now we would argue that what is good for America is probably also good for many of our allies as well,’ he said. ‘In those instances in which what’s good for us and what’s good for someone we like are not exactly aligned, then we’ll work on it with diplomacy and try to manage all of that.’
Advancing American Interests
Rubio argued that the America First policy helps not only America but also its allies and the broader world. He noted that the United States has the largest economy, the most powerful military, and the most influential culture, and that using all elements of American power to advance U.S. interests is a natural extension of that influence. ‘America First, meaning we’re going to always do what’s right for America before anything else,’ he said.
Condemnation of Elitist Opposition
Rubio also criticized the opposition from elitists, saying that if they had their way, the United States would be a middle power rather than a world superpower. ‘It’s what it is, and I think what the president is saying is that we as a country — with the largest economy in the world, the most powerful military in the world, the most influential culture in the world — we are going to use all the elements of American power to further the interest of the United States,’ he said. ‘We’re not against any of those things. We’re just not going to put them ahead of American interests anymore.’
