Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska raised concerns during Thursday night’s high-stakes “Debate for the State” in Anchorage, alleging that his Democratic opponent, former Rep. Mary Peltola, appeared to be reading from prepared notes. Sullivan’s suspicion came after observing Peltola consulting her notes during the exchange.
Sullivan questioned the moderators, asking, “Were we supposed to get these questions beforehand?” The moderator responded firmly, “Neither one of you got questions beforehand. Absolutely not.” Sullivan pressed further, stating, “I’m just watching my opponent read from questions that seem to be answered.” Peltola responded with confidence, saying, “I’m prepared.”
Sen. Dan Sullivan: We weren’t supposed to get these questions beforehand, were we?
This race has been marked by controversy, with The Gateway Pundit previously reporting on Peltola’s campaign descending into “complete chaos” after she abruptly fired multiple senior staffers just before the August primary. The campaign turned to a Chicago firm linked to Obama adviser David Axelrod, raising further questions about her strategy.
Former acting DNI Ric Grenell also criticized Peltola, calling her a “hypocrite” after reports surfaced that former aides accused her of using homophobic slurs, including toward her own gay staffers, and other crude language. The Gateway Pundit also documented a Democrat-linked effort to place a similarly named candidate on the ballot, aiming to confuse voters and siphon support from Sullivan.
Peltola, who lost her House seat to Republican Nick Begich in 2024, is the national Democrats’ top recruit to flip this Senate seat. The race is seen as pivotal for Senate control, with President Trump making a rare campaign stop in Alaska just days before the debate to support Sullivan.
