A teacher at an Oregon elementary school fought off a teenage gunman during a deadly shooting before an armed father killed him, according to police reports. The incident, which occurred at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, resulted in four deaths, including three children and a teacher.

Heroic Teacher’s Actions

The 16-year-old gunman, who had previously been a special needs student at the school, used a shotgun to open fire in a classroom, killing multiple victims. A teacher, whose identity has not been released, attempted to subdue the shooter by throwing her cellphone at him and tackling him, police said. Her actions, which “almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed,” were praised by Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz.

Armed Father’s Intervention

The shooter’s father, Kaylub Giamanco, 36, who has two children at the school, followed the initial shooting outside the campus and entered the building with a legally secured .40-caliber pistol. He arrived at the scene after hearing the gunfire and saw the teacher involved in a struggle with the suspect. Giamanco then fired at the shooter, killing him.

Shooting Details and Victims

The incident began shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday, when the suspect approached the school from an undeveloped area. He threw his shotgun over the fence, climbed onto the property, and opened fire on a red Toyota pickup truck after its driver verbally confronted him. The driver then called 911.

According to police, the suspect forced entry through the school’s double doors, fired multiple rounds into the glass panes, and entered the classroom. He then opened fire, killing three children and a teacher. A seven-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were also wounded. The five-year-old boy, identified as Rhoam Summer, was among the victims, while the identities of the other children remain undisclosed.

Community Response and Official Statements

The shooting has devastated the Bend community, with thousands gathering at a vigil to mourn the victims and support their families. Oregon’s Democrat Governor Tina Kotek expressed her grief and praised the teacher’s heroic actions, acknowledging the emotional toll on the community member who intervened.

Investigation and Gun Details

Authorities confirmed that the suspect used a Maverick 88 pump-action 12-gauge shotgun, reportedly purchased by his mother. He fired as many as 15 rounds inside the classroom and had 44 rounds remaining, according to investigators. The suspect is believed to have traveled to the campus on foot, and the shooting was the first report received at 12:59 p.m., followed by multiple 911 calls from inside the school.
