Republican House Whip Tom Emmer has called for the deportation and jailing of Rep. Ilhan Omar if it is proven she lied about her citizenship paperwork. The allegations center on whether Omar and her family falsified her birthdate when applying for U.S. citizenship in the 1990s.

Investigation Into Citizenship Claims

Omar is currently under federal investigation following claims that she and/or her father misrepresented her birthdate on immigration documents. If the allegations are true, her citizenship would be invalid, and she would not be eligible to serve in Congress.

Emmer, a top-ranking Republican from Omar’s home state of Minnesota, told Fox News Digital, “If proven true, she should face consequences.” He emphasized that the probe was not political, pointing to the judicially authorized search warrant for Omar’s home.

Democrats Deny Political Motivation

Democratic lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have denounced the investigation as political persecution, claiming it is timed to influence the upcoming midterm elections. They argue that the probe is an attempt to target political opponents and weaponize federal law enforcement.

Omar and her allies have accused the Trump administration of launching a campaign to silence critics. Omar herself stated, “This is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.”

Legal and Immigration Implications

The case has raised significant legal questions about citizenship eligibility. If Omar was 18 at the time of her naturalization, she would have needed to go through the standard process for citizenship, such as holding a green card for a certain period. However, if she was a minor at the time, her citizenship could have been automatically granted through her father’s naturalization in 2000.

The allegations also highlight the broader debate over immigration policy and the use of law enforcement to target political figures. Critics argue that such actions set a dangerous precedent for political accountability.

Federal Agents Raid Omar’s Home

Earlier this week, federal agents executed a search at Omar’s home in Washington, D.C., seizing her cellphone and other items. The raid has intensified the political controversy, with opponents accusing the administration of overreach and supporters defending the investigation as a necessary step in upholding the rule of law.
