Half a million protesters flooded the streets of France on Saturday, sparking chaos as looting, arson, and clashes with riot police unfolded across the nation. The crowd reached about 550,000 people nationwide, with 110,000 in Paris, according to the French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. Organizers estimated the national figure far higher, at 800,000, according to the CGT labor union. Police made about 400 arrests by nightfall.

Demonstrators ransacked luxury retailers in Paris and Bordeaux, breaking into Louis Vuitton, Hermès and Apple stores, according to the New York Post. Rioters set the tourism office ablaze in Lyon, Euronews reported.

Protesters forced their way into city halls in Marseille and Lille, according to the Post. Inside the Marseille building, vandals toppled a bust of Marianne, the national symbol of France. A separate fire gutted the city hall in Limoges, CNN reported.

French President Emmanuel Macron vowed to hold the rioters accountable in a post on X late Saturday. “No room for violence in our Republic. Those who have broken, attacked the prefectures as well as businesses, looted even our town halls, will be prosecuted and punished,” Macron wrote.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu accused far-left organizations of orchestrating the violence, according to the Post. He warned that public money cannot keep covering the vandalism damage, according to Euronews. Nuñez blamed most of the destruction on militants linked to the hard and extreme left, the Post reported. He said the vast majority of demonstrations stayed lawful.

The movement began with student demonstrations backing striking teachers and has run for more than a month, according to Al Jazeera. Protesters want the government to raise wages and pensions, lower prices and protect public services from budget cuts.

Protests also spread to Italy, Belgium and Albania on Saturday, according to CNN.
