Gen Z has found its new favorite habit: nicotine pouches. Despite the success of anti-smoking campaigns over the last few decades, many young adults are turning to these smokeless nicotine dosing methods. While the shift away from smoking might seem like a victory, few admit that nicotine pouches are not the miracle drug they’re memed to be.

The Hidden Dangers of Nicotine Pouches

Proponents of nicotine pouches often tout nicotine as a productivity and mood booster — it is, after all, a stimulant. But the ill effects of cigarettes were never limited to just smoke inhalation. And as the meme culture spreads, it’s time to take a closer look at the real consequences of this new habit.

One of the most concerning effects of nicotine is its role as a vasoconstrictor. This means it constricts blood vessels, leading to restricted blood flow, increased blood pressure, and a higher heart rate. These effects can contribute to potential cardiac problems, which are serious and often overlooked.

Another downstream effect of vasoconstriction is periodontal disease. While receding gums may seem like a minor issue to a 20-something Zyn user, the reality is far more alarming. Periodontal disease can progress to exposed tooth roots, bone loss, tooth loss, gum grafts, bone grafts, and even dental implants. Moreover, periodontal disease is strongly linked to heart disease, making it a significant health risk.

Beyond the nicotine itself, there’s also some evidence suggesting that nicotine pouches may contain the contaminant nitrosamine, which is linked to a range of cancers. While brands like Zyn do not contain tobacco, dip and other smokeless nicotine products that do contain tobacco can still cause mouth and throat cancer. This highlights the broader issue of nicotine’s potential carcinogenic properties, regardless of the delivery method.

Comparing Nicotine Pouches to Other Vices

While these physical effects are troubling, they are not as severe as the long-term consequences of smoking. However, the question remains: should Gen Z be proud of tying their daily routine to a stimulant-crash cycle?

There’s something noble about a soldier calming his nerves before war with a cigarette or a doctor pushing through a long shift with another cup of coffee. These are exceptional cases, but they highlight the value of using stimulants to get the job done. However, for the suburban Zoomer working a laptop job, the countryside’s Gen Z welder arriving early to the construction site, or the young urbanite grinding on side hustles, should they be proud of relying on nicotine for their daily grind?

The work ethic that drives the adoption of a Zyn habit is a testament to American greatness. But there’s also a point to that work ethic. Creating and providing for a family, building a better future, and living a well-rounded life are meaningful results from the young American’s grind. However, a healthy man or woman with a long, active life ahead of them is a far brighter future than one defined by the highs and lows of a nicotine habit.

The Role of Moderation and Healthy Habits

A stimulant’s mood swings, dependency, and end-of-day crash are a sorry state to live in, especially for a Zoomer who should have all the vibrancy of youth. While early adulthood is a good time to grind, it’s also a time to set up habits that shape the rest of our lives — ideally healthy ones.

There are plenty of obstacles for young Americans to overcome, but the daily grind is not the same as the day of a soldier facing life or death or the doctor called in last minute for a long shift. Lesser trials might call for lesser vices, like a simple cup of coffee or strong tea.

When it comes to vices, my generation could do far worse than nicotine, especially when a large swath of Gen Z is taking advantage of America’s pot-legalizing streak. But extolling a vice and becoming dependent on a drug to function are also a far cry from occasionally engaging in that vice and emphasizing moderation. Or better yet, cultivating a life of healthy habits.

The triumph of ordinary habits doesn’t have the same clout as popping another Zyn, or even boasting about a coffee addiction, but it also represents a person whose life is in order and who has the extreme discipline needed in an age of slop and convenience to wake up early, go to bed early, stop doomscrolling, and fuel with real food. That’s a better future for Gen Z, and America.

The Broader Implications

As Gen Z continues to embrace nicotine pouches, it’s important to recognize the broader implications of this trend. While the shift from smoking to smokeless nicotine may seem like a positive development, the health risks associated with nicotine use are significant. The long-term consequences of nicotine dependency, including cardiovascular issues, periodontal disease, and potential cancer risks, cannot be ignored.

Moreover, the cultural shift toward nicotine pouches reflects a broader trend in how younger generations are approaching health and wellness. While some may see it as a way to boost productivity and manage stress, others argue that it’s a dangerous habit that could lead to long-term health complications.

As the popularity of nicotine pouches continues to grow, it’s essential to have open conversations about the risks and benefits of this new habit. While the allure of a quick stimulant boost is tempting, the reality is that the health consequences of nicotine use are far more complex and serious than the meme culture suggests.
