Eric Dickerson, a Hall of Famer in the NFL, and his family have filed a lawsuit against Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village, California, alleging the institution failed to protect his sixth-grade son from repeated racial bullying and harassment. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, claims the school’s administrators neglected their duty to safeguard the child, who is identified in the complaint as ‘DD,’ a Black boy who was eventually transferred to another school.

Racial Slurs and Physical Attacks

The complaint alleges that the boy was subjected to racial slurs, including the use of the N-word, and faced physical attacks by fellow students. The family claims that despite multiple complaints from parents, the school did not take sufficient action to address the bullying. One classmate is specifically named in the lawsuit, accused of using racial slurs during a school-organized zoo trip, where the student compared the boy to an animal.

Weapons and Teacher Misconduct

The lawsuit also claims that the same classmate was known to bring a knife to campus and that the school failed to discipline the student for either the harassment or the weapon. During a music lesson, the classmate allegedly proposed a nickname combining a racial slur with the boy’s surname. When the boy reported the incident to his teacher, the teacher accused him of fabricating the story in front of other students.

Previous Discrimination Allegations

The family asserts that the school had been warned about issues affecting Black students prior to their son’s enrollment. The complaint references a 2020 petition with over 8,100 signatures detailing accounts of racism and discrimination at the school. It also points to a separate case involving another Black former student who allegedly faced racial slurs, a mock slave auction, and threats of lynching between 2021 and 2024.

School Response and Ongoing Impact

The complaint states that after the family met with Vice Principal Tamara Kuku, the school did not implement the proposed measures, such as discussing racist language with students or notifying parents of those involved. The boy was eventually transferred to another school, and the family alleges he continues to suffer emotional and developmental harm as a result of the treatment at Oaks Christian School. The school, a private, nondenominational Christian institution, has an annual tuition of up to $47,930 for new students in grades five through 12.
