Cuban bakeries in Miami face backlash after hosting a Democratic politician, sparking debates over socialism and community values.

Cuban bakeries in Miami have found themselves at the center of a political storm after a visit by Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and congressional candidate Eliott Rodriguez sparked widespread backlash. The incident, which began with a video shared by Rodriguez, has ignited a heated debate over socialism and the values of the Cuban American community.
The Controversy Begins
On October 16, Rodriguez posted a video of himself with Jeffries and Yvette Cao, owner of CAO Bakery, where he praised Cao for providing a ‘Cuban perfect little sampler.’ Cao, who opened the bakery in Miami, was seen giving them a care package to send with them as they continued their campaign. The video quickly went viral, drawing both praise and criticism.
Rodriguez captioned the post, expressing gratitude for Jeffries’ support and looking forward to working together in Congress to ‘lower costs and undo the damage MAGA loyalists have done to FL-27 families.’ However, the post did not go over well with many Cuban Americans, who viewed the visit as an endorsement of socialism, a system they strongly oppose.
A Public Response
After facing intense backlash on social media, Cao Bakery released a statement clarifying that their hospitality was not an endorsement of any political figure or party. ‘CAO stands with our Cuban American community for a free Cuba and condemns Socialism. That will never change,’ Cao wrote, emphasizing that their doors are open to all, but they do not support the ideology that many in their community fled from.
The backlash was so severe that it prompted another Cuban bakery, Vicky Bakery, to issue a statement as well, clarifying that they are a separate business and that the event did not take place at their location. Both bakeries reiterated their stance against socialism, highlighting the importance of freedom, democracy, and opportunity in their community.
Political Implications
The controversy comes as the Democratic Party continues to embrace socialist candidates and policies, including members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Despite Jeffries’ attempts to distance himself from the rise of socialism, he has faced criticism for not supporting a House resolution condemning the ‘horrors of socialism,’ which was introduced by Cuban-American Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, Rodriguez’s opponent.
Salazar criticized the visit, calling it a ‘political prop’ and an ‘insult’ to a community that has suffered under socialism. The incident has further highlighted the deep divide between Cuban Americans and the Democratic Party, as many in the community continue to reject the ideology that shaped their ancestors’ escape from Cuba.
