SSA Launches Major Data Cleanup to Prevent Fraud
Social Security Administration undertakes largest data cleanup to stop fraud and protect taxpayer funds.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is conducting its most extensive data cleanup in nearly a century, according to the Trump administration, in an effort to prevent fraud and protect taxpayer funds. The initiative, confirmed to Fox News, aims to correct inaccuracies in death dates and citizenship status, which have led to potential misuse of Social Security benefits and voter registration issues.
Key Reforms and Corrections
As reported by Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, the SSA is implementing several major reforms, including adding 17 million dates of death to files that previously lacked them, with assistance from the State Department. Additionally, with help from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the SSA is updating 25 million files that had missing citizenship information and correcting an additional 8.5 million records with inaccurate citizenship data.
These changes are critical, as multiple federal agencies rely on Social Security numbers (SSNs) to verify identities and prevent the improper distribution of taxpayer dollars. While some noncitizens may receive SSNs for legitimate work purposes, the issue arises when ineligible individuals, including illegal aliens, gain access to benefits and services.
BREAKING: The Social Security Administration confirms to @FoxNews that it has just undertaken its largest cleanup of Social Security Numbers in the agency's 91-year history, correcting nearly 15% of all U.S. citizen SSNs (roughly 50 million out of 330 million). The changes include: – Adding 17 million dates of death to files that previously didn't have them w/ help from State Dept.
– With help from DHS, updating 25 million files that had missing citizenship information.
– Correcting an additional 8.5 million records with inaccurate citizenship data. SSNs are referenced by agencies across the federal government and in states to validate identities and prevent improper payment of tax dollars. SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION STATEMENT TO FOX:
President Donald Trump highlighted the issue of redirected Social Security benefits to illegal aliens during the 2024 presidential debate, which ended Joe Biden’s political career. He later took action to end the fraud after assuming office. Vice President JD Vance also criticized the Democrat-led efforts that allowed illicit access to the SSA, as noted in the following tweet:
.@VP: "If you are encouraging illegal aliens to sign up for Social Security and steal Social Security benefits, you're not protecting Social Security, you're destroying it — so cut that shit out and be honest about your intentions." 💯 https://t.co/bcxB1PTf6X
Some states also permit voter registration using SSNs, making the reforms even more essential. The SSA’s efforts reflect a broader concern over the misuse of personal data and the need for stronger oversight to protect both citizens and the integrity of the system.
