Florida AG calls Sarasota teacher’s actions bullying, harassment

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has accused Sarasota teacher Liz Ballard of bullying and harassing an eighth-grade student for his conservative views. In a letter to the Sarasota School District, Uthmeier criticized Ballard for allegedly labeling the student a ‘misogynist’ based on his political affiliation and disregarding his parents’ wishes.

Accusations of bullying and harassment

Uthmeier’s letter, shared on X, detailed how Ballard allegedly singled out the student as the ‘conservative perspective’ in her classroom and spread derogatory remarks about the child’s father. The AG stated that Ballard continued this behavior despite the student informing her that his parents forbade him from participating in her debates.

According to Uthmeier, multiple HR investigations initiated by parents against Ballard have not led to any disciplinary action, and she continues to teach at Pine View School. He argued that Ballard’s actions violate Florida law, school board policy, and ethical principles, calling for her dismissal and revocation of her educator certificate.

School district response

Superintendent Terry Connor acknowledged receiving the letter and stated that the school board takes the concerns seriously. Connor emphasized the importance of a safe and respectful learning environment for all students, stating that the allegations warrant careful attention.

Ballard has denied the claims, calling the letter’s contents inaccurate. Jason Means, president of the Sarasota Classified Teachers Association, noted that the investigation has been ongoing for months and that some actions have already been taken by the school board. He suggested that Uth, the Florida AG, may have overstepped his bounds.
