Former NC State Athletic Trainer Faces 32 Sexual Abuse Charges

Robert Murphy Jr., who resigned in 2022 as NC State’s sports medicine director, has been arrested in Florida and faces 32 charges of sexual abuse. The charges include nine felony counts of ‘sexual contact under the guise of medical treatment’ and 23 sexual battery charges, according to TMZ Sports.

Murphy was arrested on September 23 following a grand jury indictment in North Carolina. He is currently being held in Marion County, Florida, and is awaiting transfer to Wake County, where he will face the charges.

Allegations and Resignation

The controversy surrounding Murphy escalated after soccer player Ben Locke filed a criminal complaint alleging abuse that began as early as 2015. Locke’s public disclosure led to more athletes, primarily male, coming forward with similar allegations of abuse by Murphy.

Murphy resigned from NC State in 2022, just before being fired. His resignation followed increasing scrutiny over the allegations, which prompted a wave of legal action against him.

Legal Actions and Lawsuits

In addition to the criminal charges, Murphy faces 31 lawsuits from male athletes, most filed under the name ‘John Doe,’ who allege sexual abuse by the former sports medicine director. These lawsuits highlight the ongoing legal and ethical concerns surrounding the allegations against Murphy.
