Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has asked her supporters for financial assistance, calling the ongoing federal investigation into her citizenship status a politically motivated attack. Omar, who has not been seen publicly since new details emerged about the probe, released a video message urging her backers to donate to her campaign. She said the funds would be used to fight what she described as intimidation efforts by the Trump administration ahead of the midterm elections.
Omar Claims Investigation Is Politically Motivated
Omar has consistently framed the investigation as a partisan attack, ignoring that it was initiated during the Biden administration. She has accused former President Donald Trump of targeting her specifically due to her race, gender, and religion, and for being one of his more vocal critics. In her video message, she thanked supporters for their donations, saying they would help her ‘fight Trump and his administration for trying to intimidate me and so many other people.’
‘We know that they’re running scared, we’re not going to be intimidated, we’re not going to be silenced, we’re not going to be scared,’ she said. ‘I’ll be out there campaigning alongside all of you and making sure that we beat back all of this and that we win in the midterms — win the House, win the Senate and hold this administration accountable.’
Federal Search Warrant Targeted Omar’s Home
Omar’s Washington, D.C., home was raided by federal agents over a week ago as part of the investigation. Homeland Security Investigators seized documents and electronics, searching for information related to her father’s immigration and naturalization records. Omar’s claim of obtaining U.S. citizenship at age 17 depends on these documents, but a 2023 search by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services found no record of her father’s citizenship.
Omar has since demanded the return of all items taken during the raid, but the investigation continues. She has not publicly addressed the details of the search or the nature of the documents seized, focusing instead on rallying her supporters for financial backing as the midterm elections approach.
