President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu share a critical view of the European Union (E.U.), seeing it as a persistent obstacle to their policy goals. Both leaders have publicly expressed frustration with Brussels, accusing it of operating with double standards and undermining their interests through corruption and political bias.

EU as a ‘Foe’ to U.S. and Israel

During his first term, Trump referred to the E.U. as a ‘foe’ that sought to harm the United States through trade practices. This sentiment was reiterated in 2025, when he accused the bloc of being created specifically to ‘screw the United States.’ Trump’s criticism escalated further in September when he threatened ‘very serious tariffs’ after the E.U. invited Canada to become its first ‘associate member.’

Netanyahu, meanwhile, has consistently condemned the E.U.’s foreign policy as ‘absolutely crazy,’ arguing that the bloc conditions economic, security, and technology relations on political concessions regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He attributes this to what he calls a ‘deep moral weakness’ and a strategy of appeasement toward radical Islamic terror.

EU Scandals Undermine Its Credibility

The E.U. has faced a series of high-profile scandals over the past few years, including ‘Qatargate’ and ‘Huaweigate,’ which have further eroded its reputation. ‘Qatargate’ involved allegations that Qatar and Morocco used bribes and luxury gifts to influence E.U. policies, weaken critical human rights resolutions, and push for visa-free travel perks. Belgian authorities are still investigating, with some individuals already admitting guilt, while others face charges of corruption, money laundering, and involvement in a criminal organization.

‘Huaweigate’ centered on accusations that Huawei, a Chinese tech giant, bribed E.U. parliament members to circumvent a ban on its access to Europe’s 5G infrastructure market. The E.U. feared granting an adversarial power control over critical communications systems, highlighting the tension between foreign influence and national security.

Double Standards and Hypocrisy

Both Trump and Netanyahu have benefited from the E.U.’s growing reputation for corruption and hypocrisy. The bloc’s internal scandals have undermined its credibility, particularly in areas like rule of law, transparency, and anti-corruption, which the E.U. claims to champion. For Trump and Netanyahu, this has been a welcome development, as it aligns with their own criticisms of the E.U. as an obstacle to their policy priorities.

As the E.U. continues to face scrutiny, its leaders must reckon with the growing perception that the bloc does not adhere to the high ethical standards it demands of its member states. This hypocrisy has not only tarnished its global standing but also exposed the fragility of its institutions in the face of corruption and political influence.
