President Donald Trump has commended the United Kingdom for resuming oil drilling in the North Sea, calling the move a significant boost for the country’s economy. The decision, which Trump praised on his Truth Social platform, has drawn criticism from left-wing groups who view it as a major reversal of the UK’s climate change policies.
Posting on Wednesday, Trump highlighted the economic benefits of the drilling initiative, emphasizing its potential to increase the UK’s wealth and prosperity. He also reiterated his long-standing criticism of windmills, urging their removal as part of a broader push for fossil fuel development.
The UK had previously banned new drilling for fossil fuels, but the decision to resume operations has been anticipated for months. New Prime Minister Andy Burnham faced mounting pressure from both the UK fuel industry and the Trump administration to approve the project. UK Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh officially greenlit the Jackdaw drilling project, which is expected to begin supplying gas to homes and businesses by the end of October.
The Jackdaw project is one of two major offshore drilling initiatives proposed by Offshore Energies UK (OEUK). The other, Rosebank, will take place further north near Shetland. Both projects are expected to provide long-term economic benefits, including jobs for ports, manufacturers, engineering firms, vessel operators, and specialist energy businesses. Jackdaw is projected to last 11 years, while Rosebank is expected to operate for 25 years.
The decision comes amid rising global energy prices, driven by geopolitical tensions including the crisis in Iran, damage to Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. These conflicts have constrained Russian refining capacity and export supplies, further fueling the need for alternative energy sources.
While the UK government has emphasized the economic benefits of the drilling projects, critics argue that the move undermines the country’s commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Nonetheless, the approval of the Jackdaw project marks a significant shift in the UK’s energy strategy, reflecting a growing emphasis on fossil fuel development in the face of global energy challenges.
