A 27-year-old man was arrested this week after police reported he used a sledgehammer to destroy an Iwo Jima statue at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. Officers from the Prince William County Police Department responded to the scene around 10:13 p.m. Wednesday after a report of property damage near the base’s main gate. They found Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano of Stafford actively damaging the statue, according to police.

The statue, a Felix de Weldon sculpture, is modeled on the iconic 1945 photograph of Marines raising the American flag on Iwo Jima. Officers said one of the depicted soldiers’ heads had been removed, and the estimated cost of the damage runs into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Maldonado Soriano was detained at the scene without resistance and charged with felony destruction of property, trespassing with intent to damage property, and felony injury to a monument. He is currently being held without bond, and his court date is pending.

A Historic Target with a History of Vandalism

The Iwo Jima monument, located at the main gate of Marine Corps Base Quantico, has been a target before. In 2012, vandals spray-painted a pink line around its base, drawing national attention. The statue, a symbol of American military valor, is one of the first things drivers see on Route 1, making it a prominent landmark.

Trump Administration Targets War Memorial Vandalism

The arrest comes amid a broader effort by the Trump administration to crack down on the destruction of war memorials. In August, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office charged a woman with two felonies after she vandalized the World War II Memorial on the National Mall. Pirro emphasized that such acts were a desecration of American sacrifice and vowed to hold offenders accountable.

The Trump administration has reinstated an executive order directing federal prosecutors to pursue those who damage monuments to the fullest extent of the law. This reflects a renewed focus on protecting national symbols and honoring military service.
