Eric Flores, a Republican running to unseat Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez in Texas’s 34th Congressional District, described his firsthand experience with the border crisis during his military service. Flores, who served as an operations officer during Operation Guardian Support under President Donald Trump’s first term, recounted the challenges he witnessed on the border.

Firsthand Experience with Border Crisis

Flores said he was deployed to the border in 2017 and 2018, during the Trump administration’s push to increase border security. He explained that the initiative aimed to return more border patrol agents to the border to fulfill their duties, as the previous administration had failed to support them adequately.

“We launched the first 500 troops, myself and a senior lieutenant colonel… and the initiative was to put more border patrol badges back to the border to allow them to do their jobs,” Flores said. He noted that the surge in troops was necessary to secure the border, which he described as being “completely overrunning” due to broken policies under the Biden administration.

Transnational Smuggling Network

Flores detailed the operations of a transnational smuggling organization that originated in Honduras. He explained that the group was trafficking individuals as far north as Boston, Massachusetts, and was exploiting asylum claims, commercial airlines, and other methods to evade detection.

“You name it, they were doing it. I mean, we were estimating anywhere from, you know, 1,000 to 2,500 illegal aliens a month. I mean, it was just ridiculous to see, you know, and to see how crazy these guys thought that they were on the right track,” Flores said. He criticized the administration for allowing such a large influx of individuals into the country, which he described as a major issue.

Political Stance on Border Policies

Flores also addressed the political stance of his opponent, who he said advocated for a more lenient approach to immigration. He argued that such policies had led to an increase in illegal immigration, with over 24 million individuals entering the country.

“Well, newsflash, you know that allowed 24 million illegal aliens into this country. I mean, just pretty ridiculous,” Flores said. His comments highlight the ongoing debate over border security and immigration policy in the United States.
