Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, the Somali-American congresswoman known as Ilhan Omar, has denied allegations that she used a fake name to obtain U.S. citizenship and run for office. In a recent statement, her spokesperson called the claims ‘completely false’, asserting that ‘Ilhan Omar is her real name’. The controversy has emerged amid an ongoing criminal fraud probe.

Legal Documents Reveal Fake Identity

According to a recent court filing by the DC US Attorney’s Office, Ilhan Omar was referred to as ‘Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar’. This suggests that the name ‘Ilhan Omar’ is a fabricated alias used to secure citizenship in 2000, live in the U.S. illegally, and run for political office. A former Minnesota federal immigration judge noted that these documents could ‘call into question’ every official form she has ever submitted under the name ‘Ilhan Omar’.

Legal Confirmation of Real Name

US Attorney Jeanine Pirro confirmed on Thursday that ‘Her real name is Ilhan Nur Said Elmi.’ She also noted that her sister, Sahra Nur Said Elmi, wrote a book and spoke about their relationship, reinforcing the claim that Ilhan Nur Said Elmi is her true identity. Additionally, it was revealed that Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, also used the name Nur Said Elmi, further supporting the claim of her real name.

Spokesperson Denies Allegations

In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for Ilhan Omar stated, ‘This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name.’ The spokesperson also addressed Omar’s own response to questions about her marital status, where she said, ‘Not to my knowledge.’ The spokesperson called this response ‘sarcastic’ and dismissed the allegations as ‘baseless, disgusting conspiracy theory.’

Media Criticism and Public Reaction

The spokesperson criticized the media for giving ‘this lie oxygen,’ suggesting that the allegations are being amplified without sufficient evidence. Despite the legal and familial connections to the real name, the controversy continues to dominate public discourse, with calls for transparency and accountability in political figures’ personal and professional lives.
