Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) posted a video on Friday showing her walking by a Minnesota lake with her husband, set to a Somali song with lyrics that describe humiliating enemies and making them ‘suffer and cry,’ according to a translation obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.
The 27-second clip features Omar with her husband, Tim Mynett, and the song ‘Nimaan Ciilayba Icaaya’ by Somali rapper Ilkacase Qays and singer Hodan Abdirahman. Omar captioned the post, ‘Less scrolling, more strolling. Enjoying our beautiful Minnesota lakes,’ without mentioning President Donald Trump or identifying anyone as the song’s target.
Music Choice Sparks Political Speculation
The Washington Free Beacon interpreted the music choice as a subtle critique of Trump, especially amid ongoing federal investigations into Omar’s immigration records and financial disclosures. The outlet commissioned a certified English translation of the Somali lyrics, which include lines like, ‘The almighty has given me strength,’ and ‘You will suffer and cry in seething.’
Another passage challenges the singer’s opponents, stating, ‘Let me show you who I am. No enemy dares to threaten me,’ and ‘Let the enemies die of seething. We are the ones who rule this land.’ These lyrics, according to the translation, reflect the song’s themes of subjugating and humiliating enemies, rather than remarks made by Omar in the video.
Omar’s Past Appearances with Performers
Omar has previously appeared with the performers in public events. Footage on YouTube shows her singing and dancing with Qays and Abdirahman at a gathering in May, and she was also filmed dancing beside Qays at the Somali Global Awards in Minneapolis in June.
Immigration Investigation Continues
Omar’s post came less than two weeks after Homeland Security Investigations agents searched her Washington, DC, home on October 12. The Justice Department confirmed the search was part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. The inquiry is examining whether Omar or her late father provided inaccurate information on immigration documents, including questions about her birth date and citizenship eligibility through her father’s naturalization in 2000. Omar has denied wrongdoing.
A court filing identified her as ‘Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar,’ which does not confirm the longstanding allegation that she married her brother, which she has repeatedly denied. Speaking at a rally in Sioux City, Iowa, Trump criticized Omar, suggesting she should resign from Congress due to the investigation.
