Celebs Protest Netanyahu at U.N., Actresses Detained

Transgender actor Elliot Page joined a group of celebrities protesting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations in New York City on Thursday. The demonstration, which took place outside the U.N. headquarters, included other prominent figures such as Susan Sarandon and Chelsea Manning. Video footage shared on social media showed the group blocking a road as they voiced their opposition to Netanyahu’s visit.

Actresses Detained During Protest

Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder were detained by police during the protest. Photos of the actresses being led away in cuffs quickly spread online, drawing attention before Netanyahu began his speech at the U.N. General Assembly. It remains unclear whether Sarandon and Einbinder were arrested or simply detained, according to a report by Variety.

Netanyahu Condemns Protesters

During his speech, Netanyahu accused the absent delegates and protesters of being “phony human rights protesters.” He also criticized Democratic Socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and far-left online streamer Hasan Piker, calling them out for their stance against his policies.

Actresses’ Stance on Gaza Conflict

Both Sarandon and Einbinder have been vocal about their positions regarding the war in Gaza, which began after the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. Sarandon, known for her role in the film Thelma & Louise, recently joined anti-Israel protesters outside Columbia University, despite the arrest of dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators the day before.

Public Statements on Speaking Out

Sarandon claimed at the Venice Film Festival that her career has been impacted by her activism, stating that some agencies have advised against hiring her. She emphasized that her voice matters internationally, despite the challenges she faces.

Hannah Einbinder, meanwhile, told Cannes that the cost of remaining silent is too high. She stated, “I am under no impression that my one small career could ever measure up in comparison to even one human life,” adding that it is an obligation to speak out.
