Jordan has arrested three armed militants and conducted air strikes against terrorist groups suspected of carrying out a deadly church massacre near Karak, according to reports from BBC and Reuters.
Attack and Response
The attack, which took place on October 23, resulted in nine deaths and 34 injuries, as reported by the BBC. The militants were located in an abandoned house south of Amman, where they refused to surrender and opened fire on security forces. The ensuing shootout resulted in no fatalities, according to the BBC.
King Abdullah II of Jordan vowed severe retaliation against those responsible for the attack, stating, “The terrorist attack against Karak will be met with the harshest retaliation. Those who delude themselves into thinking that they can divide Jordanians with their bullets have no chance in the face of our unity … every Jordanian life is precious, and we will strike with an iron fist against those who dare to threaten our nation.”
The Nashama have chased them to the very end. We vowed the terrorists would not escape punishment, and no proponent of dark ideologies that divide Jordanians will be tolerated. We pray that the martyrs’ souls rest in peace and wish the injured a speedy recovery. May God protect and watch over Jordan and its people
The Jordanian Air Force announced that it conducted strikes against terrorist hideouts in Syria, claiming the groups had links to the church shooting. However, it remains unclear whether these strikes were coordinated with the Syrian government, according to Reuters.
Investigation and Responsibility
The identities of the gunmen remain anonymous, and no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. The Jordanian government has not issued a formal statement, but the king praised the security forces for their efforts in “chasing them to the very end.”
Authorities have confirmed that the attack was classified as a terrorist act, though no group has publicly taken ownership of the incident. The Jordanian government continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and its broader implications for national security.
