An 81-year-old Navy veteran was fatally shot in a Walmart parking lot in Gainesville, Georgia, during a violent confrontation between two groups of people. James McDaniel, a Vietnam War veteran and former postal worker, was killed while leaving the store in his mobility scooter.
The incident occurred last week, and a week later, two suspects were arrested and charged with felony murder. Erron Lamar Dorsey, 17, and Kamari Nehemiah Tilmuth, 18, were taken into custody following the shooting. Dorsey surrendered to officers in East Point, while Tilmuth was arrested by a Hall County SWAT team during a search warrant execution.
According to Gainesville Police Capt. Kevin Holbrook, the shooting took place in a busy parking lot with hundreds of vehicles and people present. “They’re shooting across a busy parking lot with hundreds of vehicles, people everywhere at each other,” Holbrook said. “And unfortunately, this gentleman just gets shot and killed just trying to live his everyday life.”
McDaniel, who was referred to as “Senior Chief” by his family, leaves behind a wife, four children, and grandchildren. His son expressed the deep impact of the tragedy, highlighting the loss of a beloved veteran who served his country with honor.
The investigation revealed that the confrontation began inside the store and continued into the parking lot. Both Dorsey and Tilmuth were identified as individuals who fired gunshots during the incident. Dorsey faces charges of felony murder, aggravated assault, and firearm offenses. Tilmuth is also charged with felony murder, four counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
