Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence could fundamentally transform society, potentially forcing some people to live ‘like the Amish’ by limiting their use of the technology. In a recent interview on the Decoder podcast, Gates outlined the disruptive potential of AI, predicting that it will eventually replace much of the human workforce across all sectors.
AI Will Replace Both White-Collar and Blue-Collar Jobs
Gates, 70, emphasized that AI is not just a tool for intellectual tasks but will also impact physical labor through humanoid robots. ‘If this was just a machine that could work in medicine or just in law or just in education, that alone would be incredibly disruptive,’ he said. ‘But it will be every area of human activity.’
He warned that AI will eventually perform tasks such as building houses, growing food, and conducting surgery, reducing the need for human labor in the economy. Gates expressed concern over the 20-year transition period, during which society will face significant disruption, with both winners and losers emerging.
Call for Government Regulation of AI
Gates also called for government oversight of AI, arguing that it is more dangerous than other regulated industries. ‘Once you have multiple competitors, the level of responsibility can’t be with the companies. It’s completely obvious,’ he said. ‘The responsibility becomes the government’s responsibility, just like it is with every other dangerous product.’
The interview comes as Microsoft announced a ‘voluntary exit offer’ for about 60,000 employees, roughly a quarter of its workforce, as the company invests heavily in AI. Gates, who was CEO of Microsoft until 2000, stressed the need for a balanced approach to the rapid technological changes ahead.
