A leftist activist was arrested after spray-painting a gun control message on the 9/11 Memorial in New York City. Johnathan Tijerina, 31, was detained by police after he scrawled the words ‘just stop killing kids’ over the names of victims listed on the memorial panels.

Tijerina filmed himself at Ground Zero on Monday, spray-painting the message using red paint. The act was witnessed by a 16-year-old boy from the United Kingdom, Ed Duffy, who reported the incident to CBS New York. ‘I saw somebody with red spray paint, and they sprayed ‘just stop killing kids’ over some of the names,’ Duffy said. ‘And then within, like, less than a minute, the police came and arrested him.’

Tijerina is associated with the group ‘Just Stop Killing Kids,’ which advocates for a ‘universal gun registry’ and ‘universal background checks.’ The group argues that ‘civil resistance is the only strategy with a proven track record of forcing change when governments refuse to act.’

The 9/11 Memorial, located at the exact site where the Twin Towers fell on September 11, 2001, is a solemn and sacred place of remembrance. A memorial spokesman stated that the incident was swiftly addressed by security and law enforcement, and the affected area was restored to its commemorative state.

The New York City Council recently allocated $1 million to educate young people about the events of 9/11, with funds going toward scholarships for eighth graders to visit the memorial and the associated museum. The museum aims to tell the story of those impacted by the September 11 attacks and the February 26, 1993 terrorist attack.

The incident has sparked debate over the sensitivity of the memorial and the appropriateness of using it as a platform for political messages. While the group Just Stop Killing Kids frames their actions as a form of civil resistance, critics argue that such acts of vandalism are disrespectful to the memory of the victims.
