WASHINGTON — Flávio Bolsonaro, the defeated Brazilian presidential candidate, arrived in the United States on Wednesday after fleeing his home country following the recent presidential election. The State Department granted Bolsonaro and his family visas, allowing them to enter the country, according to a senior State Department official.
Escaping Political Pressure
Bolsonaro, who lost the election to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, had faced mounting pressure from Brazil’s Supreme Court, which ordered him to surrender his passports and restrict his movement. The court had also banned him from leaving the country, raising concerns about his safety.
Two close friends of the Bolsonaro family told The Washington Post that Bolsonaro feared arrest due to ongoing investigations into his alleged ties to Brazil’s betting industry and a banker accused of financial misconduct. One of his allies, living in Texas, stated, “He’s aware that he had to leave to continue the fight against tyranny. Or else he’d be a political prisoner.”
Route to the U.S.
Bolsonaro and his family crossed into Argentina on Tuesday night, boarded a private flight to Ecuador, and then entered the United States through Miami on Wednesday. This marked a similar path taken by his father, Jair Bolsonaro, who also fled Brazil for Florida after losing the 2022 election.
President Donald Trump commented on the situation, stating, “I think they’re fine people. The election was very strange, and I thought it was terrible.” He also remarked, “It looked like another rigged election, frankly,” highlighting his skepticism about the electoral process.
Extradition Concerns
A State Department official told The Washington Post that Brazilian officials had pressured the U.S. to not accept Bolsonaro, fearing that if he were convicted in Brazil, the U.S. might be required to extradite him back. This added another layer of complexity to Bolsonaro’s decision to seek refuge in the United States.
Bolsonaro’s arrival in the U.S. has sparked discussions about political asylum, legal implications, and the broader implications of his case for international relations and political dissent.
