Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski has endorsed Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tompkins in the state’s upcoming race for governor, according to Alaska Public Media. Murkowski, a member of the Republican Party, praised Kreiss-Tompkins for his ability to ‘listen to people with different perspectives and find common ground to solve the problems all of us face.’ The November election will determine the next governor of Alaska, succeeding outgoing Republican Governor Mike Dunleavy.

Ranked-Choice Voting and the Race

Kreiss-Tompkins is the only Democrat running in the race, facing three Republican opponents: Bernadette Wilson, a Trump-endorsed candidate; Dave Bronson; and Treg Taylor. The race is conducted under Alaska’s controversial ranked-choice voting (RCV) system, which requires voters to rank candidates in order of preference. This system has drawn criticism and support from various political figures.

Murkowski’s Political Alignment

Murkowski’s endorsement of a Democrat is consistent with her past political actions. In 2024, she supported the failed congressional reelection campaign of Democrat Mary Peltola and stated she would not vote for former President Donald Trump in the presidential race. Following Trump’s 2024 victory, Murkowski voted against the confirmation of several Trump appointees, including Pete Hegseth, Harmeet Dhillon, Emil Bove, and Todd Blanche.

Trump’s Response to Murkowski’s Endorsement

Former President Donald Trump criticized Murkowski on his Truth Social platform, calling her ‘Republicans’ Worst Senator, by far,’ and labeling the RCV system as ‘a TOTAL DEMOCRAT SCAM meant to confuse the Voter.’ Trump encouraged Alaskans to repeal the RCV system in the upcoming general election.

Murkowski’s endorsement highlights the shifting political landscape in Alaska, where the state’s ranked-choice voting system continues to influence the outcome of key races. As the November election approaches, the race for governor remains a focal point for political observers and voters across the state.
