President Donald Trump reiterated his proposal to nominate Republican Senator Ted Cruz for a Supreme Court seat during a campaign rally in Lubbock, Texas. Speaking to a crowd, Trump suggested that Cruz would be confirmed by both parties due to his unpopularity, a claim he repeated in his speech.
Trump’s Nomination Plan
“I would pick Ted Cruz to be the next Supreme Court Justice,” Trump said. “The Democrats will 100% vote for it because they hate the guy and they want to get rid of him. And the Republicans would 100% vote for it because they can’t stand him. They would like to get rid of him. So, I’d get 100% of the vote, and he would be a Supreme Court justice, and he’d do a great job.”
Trump emphasized that Cruz’s lack of popularity among both parties would make his nomination a sure thing. “Ted is a brilliant guy, brilliant lawyer, brilliant all that, went to law school, top student — everything — top credentials,” he said. He added that he wouldn’t need to make any effort to secure the confirmation, claiming the legislative process would be effortless.
Previous Attempts and Rejections
Cruz previously turned down Trump’s nominations for the Supreme Court during Trump’s first term. At a Wall Street Journal event in April, Cruz revealed that Trump had approached him about the vacancies. However, Cruz declined each time, preferring the political life of an elected official over the nonpolitical role of a federal judge.
In September, Cruz reiterated his stance, responding, “not just no, but hell no.” Despite this, Trump remains committed to the idea, stating that his comments did not reflect any personal dissatisfaction with the senator, adding, “he’s been great!”.

During his first term, Trump appointed Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, all of whom were confirmed by Congress. These three justices helped establish a 6-3 originalist majority on the High Court, leading to landmark decisions like Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade.
Trump’s campaign speech highlights his continued interest in using Cruz as a potential Supreme Court nominee, emphasizing the political strategy behind the suggestion. The comments reflect a broader pattern of Trump’s approach to judicial appointments, focusing on ideological alignment and legislative ease.
